This artwork depicts Lappi Lappi, a significant rock hole near Lake Hazlett in Western Australia, about 90 km northwest of Lake Mackay.
The site belongs to the Nampijinpa/Jampijinpa and Nangala/Jangala skin groups. Nestled in a sheltered basin, Lappi Lappi is a permanent water source surrounded by rich bush tucker country. During the Jukurrpa (Dreamtime), it was a safe gathering place for mothers and children.
Lappi Lappi is also the home of a warnayarra (rainbow serpent) that travels underground between rock holes. One day, while women and children were gathered at the site singing and dancing, the warnayarra heard their voices. It silently approached beneath the water, then rose up and swallowed them all.
