Namarnkol, or barramundi, is a vital fish for Bininj people. Found in oceans, floodwaters, and freshwater billabongs, rivers, and creeks, barramundi has long been a key part of life and culture. Traditionally hunted using djalakirradj (three-pronged spears) and walabi (triangular nets), they are now caught with modern fishing gear.
Barramundi are most commonly caught from the end of the monsoon (March–April) through to the humid “build-up” season (October–November). Across many clan countries, Barramundi Dreaming sites mark where the ancestral fish placed itself. Men and women often say, “My Dreaming is Barramundi — it placed itself in my country,” acknowledging the deep spiritual connection between the fish, the land, and its people.
