Medium: Wool Cushion Cover – 16in (40cm)

This painting by Rama illustrates the Mingkiri Tjukurpa – the Dreaming of the marsupial mice – connected to Kuntjanu, Rama’s ancestral country in remote north-western South Australia. The work shows the many burrows where the mingkiri live, digging with their mulya (noses) to close the entrances to their homes.

Rama explains that the Wanampi Tjukurpa (Rainbow Serpent Dreaming) brings many stories together – tjungu (as one). In the story, the mingkiri people cry when Wanampi is speared by a left-handed man. However, Wanampi’s son, still in his mother’s womb, survives – ensuring the Rainbow Serpent continues to live at the Kuntjanu rockhole. The kuniya (python) and liru (snake) ancestral beings also appear in this interconnected story, reflecting the richness and unity of the Tjukurpa.
