Artist: Nelly Patterson

Medium: Wool Cushion Cover – 16in (40cm)

This artwork by Nelly draws from her deep knowledge of the Seven Sisters Story—an epic Tjukurpa (Creation) narrative that follows the journey of the sisters across Australia.

The story tells of Wati Nyiru, a lustful man who relentlessly pursues the sisters. Beginning in Whyalla, the sisters fled south to Port Augusta and continued east, trying to escape his unwanted attention. Despite their efforts, Wati Nyiru tracked them all the way to the Canberra region. The eldest sister, sensing his presence, discreetly warned her sisters while trying to avoid detection.

Though aware of their fear, Wati Nyiru continued his pursuit, singing and dancing obsessively. His persistence forced the sisters to keep moving, camping at various places along their journey.

Nelly’s painting captures some of these significant camp sites, telling a powerful and ancient story of resistance, protection, and cultural resilience.
