Artist: Murdie Nampijinpa MORRIS
Oblong: Wool Cushion Cover – 30 x 40 cm
In this Dreaming story, two ancestral dogs — a Jampijinpa (male) and a Napangardi (female) — travelled from the west to the east. At a rockhole called Tapu, the two parted ways: Napangardi went south, and Jampijinpa headed north.
Feeling lonely, Jampijinpa howled for Napangardi, who returned to him. They reunited and were married at Ngarnka, wearing ceremonial men’s and women’s headdresses. Jampijinpa also painted himself with white clay in preparation for the ceremony.
Together, they continued eastward and arrived at Warlaku (Ali Curung), where many families of dogs already lived. Jampijinpa and Napangardi made a burrow there and began raising a large family, choosing to stay and live among the other dog families.
This Malikijarra Jukurrpa (Two Dogs Dreaming) is a powerful story about kinship, proper relationships, and the responsibilities within families and marriage.
