Oblong: Wool Cushion Cover – 30 x 40 cm
This design is based on an original painting depicting Damien’s ancestral country—Mt. Liebig, located west of Papunya. The artwork tells the story of Damien’s great-grandfather and his family as they journeyed through the desert towards Kintore, gathering bush foods along the way.
In the lower right corner, the sun sets behind a hillside, marking the passage of time. The family camps at various points along their route, represented by a series of rockholes: red concentric circles show dry ones, while blue and white circles depict those filled with clean water, which flows into the nearby creek. Red lines extending from the right signify the family’s footprints across the sand as they move from site to site.
The painting also features yellow star-like motifs symbolizing spinifex bushes and cracked earth patterns that illustrate dry claypans. Together, these elements capture the landscape’s vitality, harshness, and cultural significance.
