Artist: Cedric Varcoe
Medium: Wool Cushion Cover – 16in (40cm) (or adjust medium as needed)
This artwork tells the powerful Ngarrindjeri creation story of Ngurunderi, who travelled down what is now the Murray River in search of his runaway wives. Alongside Pondi, the giant Murray Cod, Ngurunderi shaped the river’s path, creating the landforms, lakes, and waterways of Ngarrindjeri Country.
He brought rain, made the rainbow, and taught his people everything they needed to survive—song, dance, hunting, and lore. In the end, Ngurunderi joined the spirit world, becoming a star in the Milky Way.
Artist Cedric Varcoe, a proud Ngarrindjeri man, brings this story to life with deep cultural insight and vibrant technique. In 2015, he received an Arts SA grant for professional development and cultural research, deepening both his artistic skill and connection to his heritage. His works continue to evolve, blending tradition with contemporary expression.
