Artist: Mitjili Napurrula

Medium: Wool Cushion Cover – 16in (40cm)

Mitjili paints the Watiya Tjuta (desert oak) tree, a key element in her father’s Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) from Ilyingaungau country in the Gibson Desert.
Her distinctive and recognisable style was passed down by her mother, Tjunkayi Napaltjarri, who taught her the story through traditional sand drawings. Mitjili recalls, “After I got married, my mother taught me my father’s Tjukurrpa in the sand — that’s what I’m painting on the canvas.” Her work reflects a woman’s interpretation of her ancestral story.
