Artist: Nelly Nakamara Marks
Medium: Wool Cushion Cover – 16in (40cm)
This artwork represents the Tali (sandhills) that stretch across Nellie’s home country in the Western Desert, with a rockhole in the area known as Kalimpinpa.
Shaped by the wind into long, parallel rows, the valleys between the sandhills are rich with edible plants, bush medicines, and wildlife, while other areas remain barren depending on water and soil quality.
In 2018, Nellie was commissioned by the FabAlice Festival in Alice Springs to create a rainbow-themed artwork for their launch event at Yubu Napa Art Gallery. Inspired by the Pride Flag, Nellie reimagined her traditional Tali story using its vibrant colours. This joyful interpretation sparked her continued experimentation with bold new palettes.
